  1. To me, it seems like the consensus top 4 picks are Peterson, Foster, Rice and Charles, with Johnson and McCoy as 5 and 6. In a 0.3 PPR league, who would you take with the 5th, 6th and 7th picks after those top 4?

    ReplyDelete
  2. I see you still have Daniel Thomas above Reggie Bush on your rankings, but as a Daniel Thomas owner (took in the 8th round) I am feeling a little bit nervous after that performance from Bush last night. What are your thoughts on this? Should I try to pawn Thomas of on someone in a trade or just hold onto him and be patient.
    thanks

  3. i had a 10 person ppr in person draft the other night and am looking for some comments, advice on my team
    qb- josh freeman
rb- ray rice, chris johnson, ahmad bradshaw, fred jackson, pierre thomas, javon ringer, ricky williams
wr- hakeem nicks, mike williams(tb), austin collie, santana moss, steve smith(car)
    te- antonio gates
    d- saints
    k- matt bryant

if you had to drop one player from this team who would it be out of the rb/wr list

    ReplyDelete
  4. I completely agree with Kiss My Asomugha. This is not your team. You didn't even try to make it believable. Rice, Johnson are both first round talent, Nicks is second round. Mike Williams, Bradshaw and Gates are all 4th round. Theres no way. If I have to drop one of them it would be ricky williams.

But yeah. Fake, so it doesnt matter. I wouldnt even believe that you got this lineup in an 8 team league.

    ReplyDelete
  5. McCoy at 5, Chris Johnson at 6, MJD at 7. .3 isnt too huge a deal. Its still important, but not as much as a .5 or 1 pt league. So I would draft more similarly to standard leagues than to PPR leagues.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Be patient with him. Bush did look good, but I think Miami will be an equal opportunity backfield and Thomas will get a chance to prove himself. I can't imagine that you have Thomas as a starter, so he's harmless sitting on your bench. When the season starts, if he is not performing like you want him to, just let him go. No harm no foul. I stand behind what I said at the beginning of the preseason that Thomas will have the best rookie season of the running backs.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Based on your rankings and expectations this season.. who do you take as a keeper in a PPR league? Andre Johnson or LeSean McCoy?

    ReplyDelete
  8. This question is seemingly impossible. You keep those who are difference-makers. And you definitely have two difference makers here. I would keep Johnson. Healthy, this man can win your fantasy league. He is the number one receiver. In PPR, McCoy is 5th or 6th RB. Its a gut call really. Hoping I told you what you wanted to hear.

  9. i was actually planing on using him as a starter. I am in I guess you could say a deep league: 10 team ppr with qb rb rb rb/wr wr wr wr/te te op op op slots. I had Thomas starting at my third op slot only because the scoring favors rbs. another option would be starting orton in that last op slot, but i just don't kno about him.
    Here is my whole team:
    QB Ben Roethlisberger
    RB LeSean McCoy
    RB Frank Gore
    RB/WR Steven Jackson
    WR Santana Moss
    WR Steve Smith
    WR/TE Roy Williams
    TE Dallas Clark
    OP Daniel Thomas
    OP LeGarrette Blount
    OP DeAngelo Williams
    DP Paul Posluszny
    DP London Fletcher
    DP Desmond Bishop
    DP D.J. Williams
    DP Barrett Ruud
    D/ST Packers
    K Matt Bryant
    HC Jets Coach
    Bench Malcom Floyd
    Bench Julio Jones
    Bench Kyle Orton
    Bench Greg Little
    Bench Bernard Scott
    Bench Lance Kendricks
    Bench Titus Young
    Bench Javon Ringer
    Bench John Beck

Please tell me what you think of my team and what i should do at that op solt.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  10. Damn. That is a crazy deep league. I'd have no problem starting Orton as long as QBs get decent points in your league. Just keep an eye on Thomas in the preseason. He could get the starting job and Thomas/Bush could act much like Brown/Williams did for years. Could be even splits, could be more toward either of them. I see it pretty even though. Hell, if CJ keeps holding though, Javon Ringer might be a nice start in week 1.

You should be proud though, considering how deep it is and with 10 teams this is a pretty remarkable draft.

  11. I ended up with the Cardinals for my DEF, bit looking at picking up the Jaguars. Any thoughts on defense strategy?

    ReplyDelete
  12. well it is actually like a 9 team league cause one team is just stupid. he had josh freeman as his keeper and drafted tim tebow and felix jones with his first picks.
but mccoy was my keeper and i went all rbs with my first 5 picks and traded Marion barber and nate burleson for steve smith. qbs score the second best, but my problem with them is they can easily get negative points. its -2pts per sack/fumble/int jay cutler got -25 pts last season against the giants when he was sacked like 12 times or something like that. and i didnt even draft ringer i was just looking around the fa and saw him. figured he was a better option than Casey Matthews. lol

  13. Good to see you made it! There are usually two schools of thought on defense. One is to wait to the second to last round to take one. The other is that it is worth the move up and to take a good defense (GB, PIT, NYJ, etc) in an earlier round.

I myself like to use a different strategy. I am working on an update of this post to make it more current, but here is something that I wrote last year and have been using myself for 5-6 years to great success. It hasn't failed me, and looking at your situation, it could very well solve your defensive problem. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/516519-matchups-vs-turnovers-how-to-make-your-own-fantasy-football-defense-rankings

  14. GHL,

Great information here. I am in a 12 team league that favors RB's. Is there a good round by round suggestion per position? It looks like WR's are really deep and I could wait even longer but just looking for a general rule of thumb.

I am planning RB/RB/WR/WR/QB for my first five rounds.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks John, we try.

Thats generally what I suggest. Elite RBs are getting rarer and rarer. So you need to get them ASAP. If they are highly favored in your league, then I might suggest going RB/RB/WR/RB/WR/QB (or end it QB/WR). You can still get a serviceable QB in round 5 or 6, and there are still second tier WRs on the board then. There are some very good RBs to choose from in the 4th round (Bradshaw, Greene, Mathews, F. Jones), but once round 4 ends, you are pretty much out of luck and left with sleepers.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Great-thanks! Appreciate the additional RB suggestions as well.

  17. GHL,

We just had our draft for a 12 man standard format league. I had the 8th pick. Here's how I ended up:

Matt Schaub, DeAngelo Williams, LeSean McCoy, Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, Mario Manningham, Jimmy Graham, Ravens, Garrett Hartley, Sidney Rice, Malcolm Floyd, Beanie Wells, James Starks and Greg Little.

    Do I have a shot?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Just had a 12 team PPR league with one IDP....
    QB - Stafford
    RB - Rice
    RB - Forte
    WR - Calvin
    WR - Marshall
    WR - Harvin
    TE - Finley
    K - Cundiff
    Def - Dallas
    IDP - Timmons
    BN - Moreno
    BN - Ingram
    BN - Amendola
    BN - Hightower
    BN - Jacobs

It was a wild draft, 7 QBs went off the board in the first round. Waited so long for a QB because there was too much value sitting there for me. Looking maybe to acquire another QB but might just wait and see what happens with Stafford.

    Any comments or suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Love your receivers. I think you'll do just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  20. All my readers are really damn good at drafting. This is another impressive one. Youve got very solid starters. I would have probably gotten one more receiver on your bench, but that can happen down the line. I have no qualms with how Stafford will perform this year. As long as he is healthy, he will be putting up some nice numbers for you.

    ReplyDelete
  21. First off, love the blog. It's pretty much a daily stop for me. I was just in a 16 team (yeah, you heard that right) draft and noticed that pretty much all the QBs went in the first round, allowing me to pick up 2 solid RBs. Is this a trend that's happening more this year?

Here's my team, and just so you know, I was drafting at a restaurant during a birthday dinner...some of my choices were not my own, but rather autopicks that happened when I lost internet connectivity...

    QB - Colt McCoy
    RB - Michael Turner
    RB - Rashard Mendenhall
    WR - Stevie Johnson
    WR - Jacoby Jones
    WR - Lee Evans
    TE - Tony Gonzalez
    K - David Buehler
    DEF - Dallas

    BN - Kevin Kolb
    BN - AJ Green
    BN - Roy Helu
    BN - Cam Newton
    BN - Lance Kendricks

As I said, I didn't really have much to go on with QBs, and I'm hesitant to use Kolb, as he totally burned me last year. And the WRs were taken pretty early too. I know that in a 16 team league, there's not much to pick from, but I'm hoping to at least be a little competitive this year (I finished second-to-last last year)

Any help / criticism / ideas would be great...I've got my 2nd draft for another league (10 team league) this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ive noticed for a lot of comments that the QBs are going very very early. I haven't run into this in any of my mock drafts. I think that when you have two highly ranked QBs like Vick and Rodgers being taken in round 1, this starts a snowball effect and everyone thinks that they need to get a quarterback right away. Thats probably the reason so many are going so early.

For a 16 team league this is pretty respectable. Your RBs are great like you said. QB is a little dicey, Kolb could actually have a nice year. I like him a lot as a Cardinal. McCoy has great sleeper potential though, but is still very unknown. I would like to see a stronger WR corps as well, but I'd imagine that your team is pretty strong compared to other teams in your league. Keep an eye out in the preseason for anyone that might be left on the wires. By week 2 or 3 you should probably cut one of your quarterbacks, no point having three. And depending on how Gonzo is doing, you could find a replacement for him, TE is insanely deep this season.

Thanks a lot for making GHL a daily visit! Thats great to hear. And if you have any questions about your next draft, let me know! Good luck

  23. I was thinking I would probably go with a receiver in my Flex spot, unless beanie wells starts having a good year (which im not confident in), or grant gets hurt again and starks becomes the starter. Obviously Ill be starting Dez and Calvin, who would you suggest for the flex? I think Manningham will have a pretty good year and Sidney Rice will be a number one in a weak division, albeit with a mediocre QB...What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Manningham is my pick. He'll have another great year. Beanie could break out, but I'd definitely play Mario from the start.

    ReplyDelete
  25. What's your take on Lance Kendricks (TE-STL)? I've seen some very good reports on him lately and he seems like an insane value to me. However, I noticed that he didn't make your top 25. Oversight, or just not impressed?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oversight. Sorry about that. I wouldn't have him crazy high. Between 15 and 20 probably.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for the advice about checking the WW here in the preseason...I think I might have picked up a Top 10 WR that someone dropped!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, I'm thinking of trading Finley for another WR (don't know who yet). I'd rather role the dice each week with tight end matchups. Also, here's another beauty I drafted in my 10 team standard last night...
    QB - Roeths, Stafford
RB - McFadden, Bradshaw, Greene, Ingram, Tolbert, M Bush, Delone
WR - Calvin, Andre, Marshall, Smith CAR
    TE - Graham
    K - Bryant
    D - Ravens

  29. Just curious if Antonio Gates manages to stay healthy where would you rank him among receivers. My league is completely WR/TE for all receiver positions and am just curious where you would place him. Thank-you!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Who would that be?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think Finley is solid. Playing TEs by matchup is pretty risky business I think.

And your 10-team draft is even more rediculous than your first.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Weird. If he stays healthy he can put up some great stats this year.

If he manages the numbers he put up in 2009, he could potentially be in the top 15. The pace he was on last year would definitely put him there, but last year he was essentially the primary receiver.
Based on his average performances in the last few years. I would still keeps him as a top 20-25 receiver. You can expect 70-80 catches and close to 1000 yards and 8-10 TDs from him this season if all goes well.

    ReplyDelete
  33. wondering how R Bush is so low. Heard he is suppose to be "the man" in Mia and that Henne loves to check down to rbs, thought those things would make him better than in previous years

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great site - just found it. I have a chance to trade Dallas defense for Atlanta defense. 12 team league. Should I make the trade?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm going to hold off on him moving up my list. Still has competition at the position from an exciting rookie. And I'd rather see the preseason play out. I'd also love for him to be less fragile.

    ReplyDelete
  36. ATL is probably more reliable. I really need to get my defense post on this site soon. Keep an eye out for that in the coming weeks. I'd probably try to hold off on the trade for a little while, its still middle of the preseason, so there shouldnt be a rush.

    ReplyDelete
  37. And thanks for the compliment! Glad you enjoy it. Stick around and tell a friend or two that arent in your league!

  40. Adrian Peterson. You can find out why I have Vick as a Bust here: http://godhateslosers.blogspot.com/2011/08/2011-fantasy-football-busts-who-to.html
And why AP over Arian Foster here: http://godhateslosers.blogspot.com/2011/08/adrian-peterson-vs-arian-foster-who-is.html

  41. It was Vincent Jackson, but I was way down on the waiver list, so someone else snaked him. Can you believe someone dropped him?

So, my next draft went really well, thanks to the list you printed above. For a 12 team league, here's my team...

    QB - Tony Romo
    WR - Mario Manningham
    WR - Percy Harvin
    RB - Rashard Mendenhall
    RB - Matt Forte
    FLEX - Mike Tolbert
    TE - Tony Gonzalez
    K - Adam Vinatieri
    DEF - Dallas

    BN - Roy Helu
    BN - Plaxico Burress
    BN - Michael Bush
    BN - Matt Cassel
    BN - Greg Little
    BN - Lance Kendricks
    BN - Cam Newton

I think I had a pretty fair draft this time around. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Someone dropped V Jax? You need to look into that. That is very fishy. I think that whoever dropped him is making some kind of deal with whoever had first dibs on the wire. Do some research and see if thats possible. Something is definitely not right there.

This draft was good too, but again weak at the WR position. Strong RBs though and I like Romo a lot this year. A great list of sleepers on your bench. Id probably start looking for a sleeper on waivers because it is pointless having 3 QBs, you will not be using Newton this year. Promise.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks! I got only fourth chance and by the time I had to pick A.Foster, A.Rodgers & A.Peterson was picked..
Please find below my team any suggestions pls?
    M.Vick - qb
    DeAngelo William - rb
    Cedric Benson - rb
Joseph Addai - rb (planning to bench)
Bennie Wells - rb (planning to bench, last time he disappointed me)
    Roddy White - wr
Danny Amendola - wr (my league has kick return points as well)
    Chad Ochaccico - wr
Robert Meacham - wr (planning to bench)
Jocoby Jones - wr (planning to bench)
    Brandon Pettigrew - te
Visanthe Shiancoe - te (not sure whom to bench)
John Beck - qb (back up for bye week)

Please recommend what changes I should do & what I should be aware of?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not too shabby. Vick in the first round isnt my favorite pick. You could have had Rice or J Charles or someone like that which would have made your RBs a lot stronger. All your RBs are pretty midtier guys, but all of them are definitely in place to surprise people. Ive never seen a roster full of running back sleepers, but you definitely managed it.

WR group looks good. Both TEs have the potential to be top guys too. Your backup quarterback needs to go. He hasnt even been named the starter yet, and if preseason games are any indication, I think that it is Grossman's position. I'm sure that you have a better QB on waivers, or simply wait until Vick's bye week to find a replacement and drop Beck for another RB or WR if any great picks are still available.

Overall, its definitely an interesting draft for you. You have potential. And a couple players who are definitely top 5.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thank you Sir! I still have Kevin Walter(WR) left in free agent.. Can I pick him dropping John Beck???
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thatll work. If anyone pops up better than Walter, dont be afraid to pull that trigger either. Every year I am far and away the leader in transactions. I'm constantly changing my roster and adding guys from waivers. Unless your league has a limit on transactions, don't be afraid to shake your bench up if something isnt working.
