How's My Advising? - Week 6 Fantasy Wrapup

Hey GHL fans.

I've seen a lot of people on the site and answered a lot of questions. I am quite close to 300 followers on Twitter (I honestly don't know if that is good or bad). I've been writing a few articles for other sites to try to draw more traffic to this one, all so I can better serve you.

So, I would greatly appreciate it if you all could take a little time out of your day to help out GHL.

  1. How are we doing? You like the site, don't like the site? Anything you want to see more of or less of? What can we do to make this the go-to place on the web for fantasy football advice?
  2. There are a lot of little things on the blog and each article. Lots of you have been commenting on our posts and asking your questions and we appreciate the hell out of it. But if you like a particular update, or if our advice works for you.. we'd really appreciate a little love in return. Hit a Google +1 button, Share it on Twitter or Facebook. Maybe itll act as a little Karma.
  3. Tell a friend. I know it would be crazy for me to ask you to post this site's URL to your fantasy football competitor, but I'm sure you've got a friend or two in another league. Go ahead and tell them about us.
I thrive on positive feedback and boosts to my ego, so seeing more traffic would be an incredible advantage to everyone involved.

So please, the next time you see something on GHL that you like. Share the love a little. Its what all those crazy buttons are for.

If we all work together and do our part.. I can become famous. And that is really the end goal for all of us.

Week 6 Advice Time

Hey all.

Once again I will be taking and answering all questions on this site until 10am (ET). After that, I will be away from the computer, but will have my phone so you can ask any questions you have on Twitter @godhateslosers.

Ask away!

2011 Week 6: Revisiting Shuffling Defense Strategy (SDS)

It's a lovely boring Saturday, so what could possibly be better than pouring over fantasy football stats to share with you? Not a thing.

We are five weeks through the season, and it seems that we are finally able to see a bit of a picture showing up in consistency of NFL teams.

Before the season began, I introduced to you my Shuffing Defense Strategy.

Essentially, this strategy boils down to changing your defense out each week. Rather than picking a defense to roll with the entire year, you can earn a higher fantasy point total from your defense by strategically choosing your defense from the free agency based on the team that they are playing against.

Let's take a look at the highest scoring defenses so far in the NFL and compare them to a perfectly deployed SDS.

Week 6 Running Back and Wide Receiver Sleepers

This has been a prime year for sleeper candidates. It seems that every week a new name emerges and has the waiver wire buzzing.

This is largely in part due to the big names that are going down nearly every week with injuries. So if you are in that boat, fear not.

If you lost a key player like Jamaal Charles early in the year. Or suffered in the beginning with setbacks from Frank Gore, Arian Foster, Miles Austin and a slew of other receivers. Or were dealt a blow recently with the injuries to Andre Johnson, Joseph Addai and LeGarrette Blount.

Now is the time to curse a little bit, settle down and start shopping for the fantasy football hit, that is sure to pop up in Week 6.

Follow along for the list of running backs and wide receivers that I like to perform higher than expected this week. Who knows, one might be available in your league.

NFL Week 5 Pick'em Predictions and Survival Football

Quite the week lined up. Of the 13 games this week. I have 10 of them being won by the visiting team. I don't know how I feel about that, but let's see what happens.

I think the Bills will continue to slide after the Bengals of all teams laid the blueprint of how to stop them. Eagles should be able to capitalize with their pass game.

Titans show no signs of slowing down as they take out the heartless Steelers.

Colts finally get a win under their belts at home against the Chiefs.

I think the loss of Andre Johnson is enough to throw the Texans off their game.

I struggled with the Lions and the Bears. The Lions have to be the worst looking 4-0 team ever, it was the pass rush against heavily-sacked Cutler that pushed me toward Detroit in this one.

If you've got any upset of your own or want to point out why you think one of us is out of our mind, go ahead and post it in the comments.

Fantasy Football Strategy: Stealing Talent

We addressed the less-fortunate teams last week, hopefully you all got a win this week and are sitting pretty at 2-2 or at least 1-3. If you are still fishing for wins, hang in there and make some moves this week as we are seeing even more injuries and some potential talent will be available for you.
However, this post is going out to the 3-1 and 4-0 teams. You’ve got a solid lineup and likely don’t need to make any big sleeper moves, but in fantasy football, you should never be sitting idly. Time to move on to a favorite strategy of mine. It will likely make you kind of an asshole, but it’s worth it.
It’s time to start stealing. And this is how it’s done.
In Week 4 we saw some performances that caught our eye, and they are likely still sitting in free agency. But they won’t be for long. These players are hot commodities and will be snatched up by the other teams in your league. Time to steal them.
In one of my leagues, I am 4-0.
I have Adrian Peterson and Matt Forte as my starting running backs, and I have Beanie Wells on my bench. Needless to say, I’m pretty well off at running back.
My bench still has a few leftover experiments from the draft that didn’t pan out as I had hoped. So, what is the point in wasting any more time on Steve Breaston or Caddilac Williams?
I have already put my waiver wire picks in to grab Stevan Ridley, Ryan Torain and {insert Houston Texans wide receiver not named Andre Johnson here}.
I don’t need these players, and (knock on wood) will never have to use them because my starters will remain healthy. But by snatching these sleepers up and getting rid of my players that have already let me down this season, I am doing something just as valuable as picking up starters. I am making sure that other teams can not start them.
With Peterson and Forte getting me 20 points per game, I don’t care a little bit if I see Ridley make 15 points on my bench. And I can rest assured that he is not giving 15 points to my opponent.
It’s a simple, douchebag strategy, but it is definitely one to consider. Playing defense and not allowing other teams to pick up the sleepers is keeping you safe. Make the move. Even if you are not hurting at running back or wide receiver, it is worth the investment to keep them out of your competitions’ starting lineups.

NFL Week 1 Pick'em Predictions and Surival Football

Alright, welcome to our Week 1 Pick'em Predictions.

This year we are going to have a new addition to this post. We will also be predicting Survival winners. The rules for us are the same. We can only pick each NFL team one time.

For those of you that are new to GodHatesLosers, you will notice that Jordan and I are both making predictions. MGLS stands for My Girlfriend's Little Sister. She is 11. She enjoys drawing, being in the 6th grade, and dancing to "Michael Jackson: The Experience" video game on the Wii. Her picks are much like a coin toss, except more adorable.

Week 1 Fantasy Football Position Rankings

Here we are. The long awaited Player Rankings for Week 1. This is a weekly post where we will look at every matchup in the league and list the players how we think they will perform.

A few little notes for you:
  • This isn't exactly standard and isn't exactly PPR. Consider it almost a .5 PPR ranking.
  • Just because these are my rankings, they may not reflect the advice that I give you one-on-one. Sometimes the gut has to outweigh the statistics.
  • Kicker is borderline impossible to predict. My picks are based a lot on strength of offense. Its all about how many times a team will make the red zone.
  • The Defense rankings you see here are what I will be using for Shuffling Defense Strategy. There are a handful of teams in the top 10 that are likely available in your waivers. Snatch them up unless the team you already own is higher.
  • If I happened to skip any player that seems he should obviously be on the list, please bring it to my attention. I likely just forgot him.
  • Feel free to use this post as an Advice post. If you have any roster questions, fire away.
  • IDP rankings are very similar week in and week out. Basically, if the guy is performing well, play him. If he is not, drop him. I'm not in the game of predicting tackles.

Enjoy!

“Iupati like it’s Your Birthday” League Fantasy Football Draft Results

UPDATED! I accidentally got Jordan's team entirely wrong. Phew. I fixed it though. Its much more embarrasing for him now.

Finished this draft about a week ago and wanted to let everyone know how it turned out. If you’ve been reading through the posts, this is the draft where Jordan drunkenly drafted three… THREE… tight ends. You would think that he take the advice of his own fantasy website, but no.
Below are the results for my team, Jordan’s team, and Gurgs’s team. I personally think that Gurgs had the best draft in the league. Let me know what you think in the comments.
My Team- Tootsie Sproles (Second overall pick)
QB- Philip Rivers
RB- DeAngelo Williams
RB- Beanie Wells
RB/WR- Kenny Britt
WR- Hakeem Nicks
WR- Mike Williams
WR/TE- Malcolm Floyd
TE- Jared Cook
DEF- Atlanta
K- Mason Crosby

Bench spots- Arian Foster, AJ Green, Zach Miller, Steve Smith (CAR), Antonio Brown, DeMarco Murray, Steve Breaston

Jordan’s Team-Sweet, Sweet Cundifflingus (10th overall pick)

QB- Tony Romo
RB- LaGarrette Blount
RB- Tim Hightower
RB/WR- Wes Welker
WR- Andre Johnson
WR- Roddy White
WR/TE- Jimmy Graham
TE- Jason Witten
DEF- New England
K- David Akers
Bench spots- Jonathan Stewart, Rob Gronkowski, Brandon Jacobs, Lance Moore, Hines Ward, I. Redman, Marion Barber

Gurgs’s Team- Orton Hears a Who (4th overall pick)

QB- Matthew Stafford
RB- Ray Rice
RB- Frank Gore
WR/RB- Jahvid Best
WR- Vincent Jackson
WR- Miles Austin
WR/TE- Austin Collie
TE- Jermichael Finley
DEF- San Diego
K- Sebastian Janikowski

Bench spots- Mark Ingram, Mike Tolbert, Mike Thomas, Michael Bush, Jerome Harrison, Jerome Simpson, Chris Cooley

So, those are the teams. The draft was before Foster’s injury and before CJ ended his holdout, so I’m left without my first pick for week 1. As I said, I believe that Gurgs had the best draft in the league, but her team is one of the most fragile fantasy teams I’ve ever seen put together in my life. Stafford, Gore, Best, Jackson, Collie, Finley all missed time last year and Austin is nursing a hamstring right now.

Don't get in Twitter Fights with GHL

I’d assume that some of you are reading this because you found out about GHL on Twitter. (If you don’t follow us, you should @godhateslosers). But sometimes I find myself accidentally putting some advice and a link on another fantasy advisors tweet. They don’t particularly care for this. And Twitter wars ensue.

I particularly enjoyed this one between myself and @DanielWolfNFL. I decided to share this with you. Let his comments be an example of how to not run a fantasy football team.

DanielWolfNFL
My 5 faves at TE for #FantasyFootball: Finley (#Packers) Daniels (#Texans) Graham (#Saints) Lewis (#Jaguars) Watson (#Browns)

godhateslosers
@DanielWolfNFL No Gates? No Witten? No Clark? I'm confused.

DanielWolfNFL
@godhateslosers Gates has foot issue. No one knows whats up with PManning. Will Romo return to form? I'm passing on all of them.

godhateslosers
@DanielWolfNFL You make terrible decisions.

DanielWolfNFL
@godhateslosers: Finishing 2nd in both my leagues lst yr says otherwise.

godhateslosers
@DanielWolfNFL 2nd place! Damn. Twice! You're right. I shouldnt have doubted you. Stats be damned, this guy got the silver! #fantasyfootball

DanielWolfNFL
@godhateslosers I can sense your sarcasm in your tweet.

godhateslosers
@DanielWolfNFL Good. I laid it on pretty thick there.

DanielWolfNFL
@godhateslosers What did you finish? Last? If you say 1st youre already lying.

godhateslosers
@DanielWolfNFL 5 leagues. 1st in 3. Playoffs in all.Check out GHL. Learn something. Your followers would appreciate it. http://bit.ly/p9uOMC

DanielWolfNFL
@godhateslosers I dont need to listen to someone who is blatantly sarcastic. Thanks but no thanks. My methods work too. Thanks for playing.

godhateslosers
@DanielWolfNFL Your method works if you have an overwhelming trophy phobia. Your loss. At least tell your followers, they deserve GHL

Then he didn’t respond and blocked me. But not before I could copy all of them! I hope you enjoyed. Let me know in the comments what you think and tell me who your top 5 tight ends are.

I’m doing some heavy IDP research tonight so I hope to have that post up.

Remember to add @godhateslosers on Twitter. Every Sunday before kickoff you can tweet me your lineup questions and get quick responses.

Ten Bold Predictions for the 2011 Fantasy Football Season

Sorry for the lack of post. Turns out I actually had to do some nonfantasy football related work today. I feel terrible about it. Judging from mock drafts and a lot of the drafts that readers have shown me, this year is anything but predictable. We have first rounds where more than 7 quarterbacks are taken, we have about 10 running backs that we can expect to be great and a very muddled middle, and about 100 wide receivers that could become fantasy starters.

For this post, I want you guys to put your bold predictions in the comments. If you have a question or need advice, you can continue posting your questions on the Advice Time or Player Rankings post. Let's leave this one for predictions. Fantasy player related, NFL related. Whatever you think is going to happen, let me know.

Enough waiting... let's irresponsibly jump to some conclusions.

Advice Time 8/19

Hey there kids, Let's start another Advice Time.

Before we do anything, I just want to again thank everyone for joining me. Along with your advice, I want to invite everyone to include a post idea, something you like about GHL, or something you'd like to see included. I'm not running this site for my health, and I'm sure as hell not famous yet, so let me know what you guys want to see.

Also, I plan on adding an awesome new feature once the regular season starts. For a couple hours before kickoff every Sunday I will be standing by on Twitter to answer any gameday questions. So get on your Twitter accounts and follow @godhateslosers for live pregame advice straight from GHL.

Add Us!

That's all the housekeeping I've got. Going to have an updated player rankings post this weekend for you, so warm up your printers and expect over 250 players ranked by positions for your upcoming draft.

And as always I ask you guys to spread the word about GodHatesLosers to any and all of your fantasy football loving friends (that aren't in your league, of course). Alright! Ask away!

Fantasy Football Player Profile: Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice

Fantasy Football Profile: Why I’m Drafting Ray Rice with Fantasy Pick Number Three
I’m well aware that I am not proving myself as some kind of soothsayer, but hear me out. Mock drafts have Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice having an ADP between 4.8 and 5.3. So you aren’t going to hear an argument from anyone about whether or not he is a first round selection. No one is going to question that he is one of the few elite backs in the fantasy football draft this year.
But this article is for those sitting with pick number three or four in their draft. This article is for the few people who are passing up on this man and letting him fall to pick five or six. I’m out to prove why Ray Rice should be… nay… must be the third running back on your fantasy football draft list.

2011 Fantasy Football Draft Strategy: Kick Return Leagues

So, the bad thing about asking people for article ideas for your blog is that you are pretty inclined to actually write about their suggestion. This one comes from @ChevyJas from Twitter. Chevy wants an article about the top punt and kick returners for a fantasy football league that give points for return yardage.

Anyone who is a frequent reader of my site will know that I am pretty anti-return yardage in fantasy football. It is an unjust scoring system when Detroit Lion Stefan Logan is the highest fantasy scoring wide receiver on his team instead of Calvin Johnson. And don’t feed me the argument that “They are an important part of the team and should get points for what they do.” No. In that case, let’s make a league where you can draft offensive linemen and punters. Their effort affects games. But no one wants to join the league where I’m taking Steve Weatherford in the fourth round because he’s a beast at pinning them in the 20.

But I’ll write the kick returner article, even though I disagree. I will cater to the requests of the ill-informed minority. I hate discrimination more than my grandfather in Boca hates his new black neighbors. (Because the husband is always away on business as a lawyer and doesn’t have the time to properly care for his lawn, you racist.)

Strategy for Drafting Early Receivers

Every day we are getting closer and closer to the 2011 NFL season, which means that we are definitely getting closer and closer to your fantasy football draft. For the next few weeks we will be updating the player rankings as preseason statistics come in. We’ll also be providing you with more draft analysis and strategies so you get the most out of your 2011 fantasy football selections. If you have an idea for a draft strategy article or something you would like to know more about in the preseason, give us a comment and we’ll provide our expertise.

Something that I have been talking about a lot is the need to draft your running backs early. There is a dwindling number of elite talent at the running back position, so taking them with your first couple picks is a pretty simple way to a successful season. However, in larger leagues, this sometimes poses a problem for those with early picks.

Response to Matthew Berry's Draft Day Manifesto

Good Morning God Hates Losers!

Today I want to put my two cents in about the infamous Draft Day Manifesto. The Manifesto is an epic post done every year and presented by Fantasy Guru Matthew Berry of ESPN. He is a writer that I truly respect and try to emulate with every post.

However, in the recent Draft Day Manifesto post, the first thing he talks about is Michael Vick. I would have no problem getting Vick on my team, but anyone who has read any of my posts will know that I don't find him a first round quarterback. Berry disagrees. You can read the entire Draft Day Manifesto here (don't worry kids, it will open in a new window). But I'll lay down the groundwork of the disputed statistics in his column.

Here we go.

Draft Strategy: So Crazy, It Might Just Work

Alright. I’m going to admit that this draft strategy might be a little bit out there. I have no idea if I picked this up from an article or something in the last few seasons, or it was some kind of fantasy football induced dream, but this strategy is crazy enough that it might actually work. Caution: I have never used this strategy and the workings behind it are entirely theoretical. OK. Let’s do this.

Fantasy season starts out nice. For the first four weeks there is at least a small sense of parity in your league. But then bye weeks happen. And we all know that there is nothing as frustrating as having one of your key players out on a bye week. Even worse, two of them. So from Week 5 of the NFL through Week 10 or 11, your team is not performing at the highest level. It doesn’t matter how good your draft was, for those 6 weeks, your team is playing below 100% because one of your starters is off.

Value over Risk: 5 Arguments Against Fantasy Football Handcuffing

Hey GHL fans. This week we’re going to be focusing a little bit on some draft tactics and strategies that you can enforce in your league. Over the weekend, I tried my damnedest to run a few mock drafts, but unfortunately there was at least one idiot in each one of them skewing the data. I kid you not, some ass took Peyton Hillis with the second overall pick. Jerk. Anyways, let’s kick things off with my five arguments AGAINST Fantasy Football Handcuffing.

Fantasy football owner are constantly trying to maintain the greatest team they can manage. Whether it is by way of the snake draft or through auctions, the primary goal is a simple one: Value. Value is most noticeable in the first five or six rounds of the draft, after all those are the rounds that you are drafting your starters. But the real subtlety of value comes in the later rounds in selecting backups.
