Been reading your blog-great work!
ReplyDeleteJust a quick question.
I am new to a keeper league, 12 teams and two keepers allowed per team. Just want to make sure that I am thinking about this the right way. Since 24 players are kept, would a player like Santonio Holmes who has an average draft position of 51 be adjusted higher? I have someone looking for my 5th round (59th overall) and I think I would be overpaying or am I over thinking ?
Comments appreciated. Thanks

The general rule I've stuck to in keeper leagues is that you keep running backs. The way I see it, with all the running back by committees happening in the NFL, there are really only 10-15 'elite' running backs in the NFL. Either you have these guys or you are left with a very bleak final running back point total.
ReplyDeleteKeeping a very highly ranked WR makes sense because you might lose him, but there are plenty of WRs that will total over 1000 yards, and you can rest assured that about the top 40 WRs will all get over 800 yards.
Since you are only allowed to keep 2, I'd say keep your RBs. This is conditional on who you have at RB, but usually its the way to go. Keeping Santonio (keeping any player with an Average Draft Position of under 30 is usually a no-no as well) would be a bad call. And at GHL, we don't make bad calls.
Hello God Hates Losers,
ReplyDeleteFound this via Bleacher Report and I'm liking what I'm reading. Good work. Quick question:
I'm in a few leagues this year and one of them happens to be an 8 team league. With such an abundance of talent essentially guaranteed to each team, I was thinking of a trying to shake up my traditional draft strategy and possibly trying to grab a few elite receivers early on (read: Andre and Calvin Johnson) and taking second tier upside RBs like Blount (and "the guy from Miami" in later rounds) rather than great RBs and mid level WRs. QBs, I feel, are pretty much dime a dozen once you hit a certain point--and I'm really high on Bradford because he's in a Mcdaniels offense--so I'm cool with not taking a Vick or Rodgers early. Your thoughts? Any other ways you would suggest getting ahead? Thanks in advance!
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI've been in a handful of 8 team leagues and I'm a fan of your mixing it up strategy. In my last 8-team draft I ended up grabbing WRs in the first three rounds, just because they were falling to me and it was impossible to pass up. If you're doing this, just keep a close eye on how fast the running backs are going, because you definitely do not want to pass the Blount/guy from Miami level. Perhaps going WR/WR/RB, or WR/RB/WR would be good, just because the running back position seems pretty slim this season.
As far as waiting on a QB, I think that is something you can get away with. And if you are confident waiting on Stafford (I'd also pick up a back up right after him in case of injury), then you have the freedom to draft WRs, RBs, TEs pretty deep as Stafford isn't ranked too highly.
Found your site thru Bleacher and it's awesome. I wanted to know what you thought about my draft strategy situation: We are doing a case race to determine the draft order - yes I'm from WI. Winner gets their first choice of position in a 10 team non-ppr league - 2nd place gets 2nd choice and so on. Is there a draft position you favor for this type of league assuming I can win?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment. We do what we can. I've been saving a great post for tomorrow, so be sure to check it out!
ReplyDeleteTo be completely honest... if I had a choice about where to draft, it would be the end. Either spot 9 or 10. You are practically guaranteed solid players with these picks. You are in prime position to take a high receiver and high QB in round 3 and 4. Each time I've been in the last three picks, seems always felt like they were falling into place. Its fun to have the first or second pick to get that big name elite running back, but then you are forced to have either pick 19 or 20 for your second player, which I'm not a fan of. So let your friends race, pretend to give it a good effort for their sake and laugh a little on the inside.
