Week 7 Fantasy Football Position Rankings

Another week of rankings is all set. Got a handful of players that are surprises this week, so I'll be looking to make a sleeper post in the near future to explain them all. A few updates on trades and their impact on fantasy can be found here.
As always, feel free to ask any questions that you have. For your convenience, this post will be tagged as "Position Rankings" so later in the week instead of scrolling forever, you can simply click the category on the right. I know, I'm pretty great.
This week has been all about improvement and expansion for GHL. You all have probably noticed the new layout, so please take a minute to answer the poll on the left hand side. There will be a new one up each day, so make sure you come back and help out your fellow GHL-reading fantasy owner. I'm picking the poll questions based on comments left in the blog or questioned ask to GHL through Twitter (@godhateslosers).
As far as expansion goes, I ask each of you who finds this helpful to either hit the tweet or facebook button, or even something as simple as telling a friend outside of your league about us. The more people know about GHL, the better.
If you're looking for some light GHL reading, check out a post I did for ffblife. Its about my starts and sits for the Tampa Bay/Chicago game taking place at Wembley Stadium in London. You can find that here: http://ffblife.com/index.php/michaeliggy/210-omoavoid7

  1. shonn greene, moreno, d moore, demaryius thomas, or julio jones at flex

  2. Gotta go Julio Jones. Too many questions surrounding the other WRs you listed. Moreno is garbage and lost the starting job, something like 16 fantasy points all year long. Greene is starting to look like an NFL RB, but SD can be tough and he is still very inconsistent.

  3. i also have hillis in that option, but he looked pretty awful

  4. What are your thoughts on Reggie Wayne, Percy Harvin, Steve Breaston, and Ryan Torrian? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Probably won't play. Even if he does, I like Jones

    ReplyDelete
  6. Got them in the rankings.

Harvin could surprise. Looked like the favorite target of Ponder for the brief time he was in. Wayne has taken second seat to Garcon. Consider him a WR2 really. Breaston is on and off. Pretty inconsistent, can do damage though, but I wouldnt start him. And Shanahan obviously despises fantasy football. Its anyones guess as to who will get the ball the most. Torain is the highest Redskin on my list, but I dont really trust any of them.

  7. Hi GHL,

Need your help to choose which RB & WR to play this week, I am in a 2RB 3WR 16team head to head league..

    RBs:
Beanie Wells(I know he is a definite start)
    Addai(Inj)
    Benson(Suspension)
    DeAngielo William(Unpredictable)
Jackie Battle(had 1 big game & playing OAK)
DeMarco Murray(some say he is secondary & gonna split with choice besides poor running offense)

    WRs:
Roddy White(I think he is a must start)
    Jabber Gaffney
    Robert Meachem
Joushva Cribbs(my league allows kick/punt return 1 point for 20 yards, whereas 1 pt for 10 reception & 6pts for TD)

I know my WRs are very week, I still have M.Crabtree available as FA but i am not sure who to drop at this point to grab him or is he worth a grab?

Thanks & have a good day!

  8. Our league had free agency last night, and a crowded under-achieving WR corps suddenly got even more crowded (someone dropped Brandon Lloyd, I couldn't resist). 12-team, non-PPR, we start 2 WR and 1 Flex. If you had to drop 1-2 players from the following, who would it be and why? Mike Williams TB, Harvin, Manningham, Lloyd, Heyward-Bey. I also have Fitzgerald. Unfortunately, people haven’t been too open to trading, or else I’d pursue that route a bit more. I have the option of dropping someone now to make another move (see the questions below), or waiting til next week after seeing how these WRs perform this weekend.

Also, I am somewhat depleted at RB, as I have Foster, Best, Felix, and Demarco Murray (as of last night). The Lions backfield is tough to figure out (and I’m even a Lions fan); does Ronnie Brown have the most value in the long run when Best comes back? Also, do you think Bernard Scott will have a good performance next weekend against Seattle? And lastly, does Spiller have any value in a non-PPR league? Sorry for all the questions, but these are all the things I’m pondering as I look to bounce back from my 1-5 start! Thanks!!

  9. Please disregard my question about Ronnie Brown, given that the trade was revoked...

  10. Well, I've been away for a bit because grad school is sucking the life out of me! Just saw the new changes tonight and think they're great! In response to your other question, your advice, as always, is working great for me! I'm 5-1 in one league and 4-2 in another. Sure, there's the off prediction every now and then, but no one calls them 100%. I'll admit that I use several sources for rankings to get multiple opinions, but yours are the standard the rest are compared to. Keep up the great work!

Need a DEF p/u for SDS this week. Currently holding Houston. You've got Cleveland (vs. SEA) and SD (vs. NYJ) right next to each other. I'm leaning towards Cleveland because Seattle ranks as the #1 friendliest team for Defenses in my league. Jets rank #13 on that list, so I'm not as keen on SD (plus I had them for the first few weeks and wasn't impressed). Denver is also intriguing to me, since they're up again Miami, who ranks as the 4th friendliest. This league is a bit tougher to gauge defenses, because outside of the normal scoring means, there are points awarded or taken away depending on both points allowed AND yardage allowed. Thoughts?

Also need a good backup RB in one league where both my starters (McCoy and FJax) are on bye. My regular backup is Felix Jones. *sigh* Should I pick up D. Murray or Battle? I feel like Murray has the better overall situation, but I would like to hear what you think as well.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Should I offer LeSean McCoy for Calvin Johnson, or is it pointless?

    QB - Cassel
    WR - VJax
    WR - Little
    WR - Julio Jones
    RB - Mendenhall
    RB - Sproles
    TE - Olsen
    K - Baily
    D - NYJ

    Bench
    Vick - bye
    Nicks - bye
    D.Nelson - bye
    L.McCoy - bye
    Hightower
    Aaron Hernandez - bye

    His team
    qb - Romo
    qb - E.Manning
    wr - C.Johnson
    wr - A.Johnson
    wr - S.Johnson
    wr - Bowe
    wr - Kevin walter
    rb - Blount
    rb - Hillis
    rb - Daniel Thimas
    rb - Ingram
    rb - McGahee
    te - Gonzalez

  12. I'm considering starting R. Torrain over Vjax this week. Am I crazy? I realize that Brandon Marshall put over 100 yards on Revis Island, but Vjax is still recovering from hamstring problems.
On the flip side, we probably won't know if Hightower is returning or not until i'm watching him on Sunday scoring touchdowns.
    Thanks

  13. Just a question on your rankings. You think Rivers is going to play a better game against the Jets over Big Ben at Arizona? The Jets defense in terms of turnovers has been frightening, and the same cannot be said for arizona. Loving the new layout btw, it makes searching for stuff so much easier.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Honestly, I'd go Wells and give Battle a shot this week at RB.

White, and Gaffney would get the nod from me. I dont pay much attention to return yardage, so I really dont know how many points per week Cribbs is getting in that regard. If he has been putting up impressive numbers there, then I say go for it with him. I cant imagine that he is getting more than 5 per game returning kicks though. So you might have to risk it with Meachem.

As far as a drop for Crabtree, its tough to call. Since you only start 2 RBs, I'd suggest getting rid of one of them. I hate to say Murray in case he does something big, but that offensive line and their running game so far suggests otherwise. He might be the safest to drop, but also has the biggest upside. Williams is underperforming, and it is unlikely that he'll start for you, so he might make the list of potential cuts too.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your question!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Tough question. I made it my poll for the day. So thank you for that. I like the pickup of Lloyd, he should be good once Bradford is healthy and good to go.

For the drop, its pretty difficult, but I would make it Manningham. He hasn’t been living up to expectations and Cruz is right in the rearview mirror. I think Harvin, Heyward-Bey and Lloyd are all on the upswing based on changes to their teams. Heyward-Bey is iffy, but I think worth the gamble. Mike Williams HAS to pick it up eventually, so you should hold onto him. He is a number one WR afterall.

But, since getting Brown isn’t really an option anymore, it might be good to hold onto everyone.

As far as your other questions. I do like Morris’s chances with Best out. Scott is a backup, but could do some damage against SEA. Cincy hasn’t had a spectacular run game this year though. But he is a good sleeper play if you need the help at RB that week. I avoid Spiller, Fred Jackson is the man there and will be from here on out. Outside of PPR, I don’t see much value at all.

At 1-5. It is time to start taking risks. So don’t be afraid to try and shake up the trade market and make a few gambles at RB with your injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Aww.. I bet you say that to all the fantasy football advice site. Thanks!

I’d roll with Cleveland. Should be a pretty good score against the Whitehurst-led Seahawks. Jets create turnovers, but this game is hard to call. Could be a big score, could stay pretty small. Miami surprised me against the Jets which is why I’m a little down on Denver. Brandon Marshall managed over 100 yards against Revis, so I doubt any other WR can give him and Moore much trouble. They turn the ball over a lot, but I still like CLE the best of the three.

I’m in a league that calculates the yardage too, so it is definitely harder to gauge. Even more of a reason to play based on matchup though. SEA is definitely going to stay low in yards.

I like Battle’s matchup this week. He should also receive more carries than Murray. Murray does have a great matchup, but I’d imagine that he splits with Choice a lot. If the Cowboys get up, they will be doing a bit of running though. I think Battle has the better week though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I say go for it. McCoy is a definite starter for you, but your backup RBs are stronger than your backup WRs. I think having Calvin Johnson will boost your point total every week. Especially a good sign since it looks like Mendenhall has finally turned the corner.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It is one hell of a gamble. I would highly vote against it though. VJax can get the job done as Marshall did. There is a chance that he will stay low on fantasy points, but you have to start a top WR over a question mark of a RB.

I have Torain as my highest Redskin running back, but you just cant be comfortable with the situation in Washington. If Hightower plays, his carries will be drastically reduced. Panthers do have a hard time against the run, but I feel that you really need to keep one of your best WRs in the game every week he plays.

It is a big gut call if you go with Torain. And if you decide to, more power to you. I see your rationalization, and it could pay off big. Its just too risky for my taste. Let me know what you decide though, this is a really interesting idea.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Glad you like the layout. It really does help out a lot. If you have any suggestions for GHL improvement, by all means, let me know.

It comes down to trusting Rivers more. He is more consistent than Big Ben. Roeth has turned a corner, and could very well do some terrible things to the Cards. But the Jets have been thrown on this year. Revis got beat last week my Marshall, Cromartie has been beat by almost everyone. And Rivers is much better QB than Sanchez. I like his chances. Wish he had Gates, but VJax could surprise and I have Malcolm Floyd embarrassingly high this week.

  20. In a 12-team league I've built up a solid roster from the draft and trades:
    QB's- Newton, Tebow(bench)
RB's- Foster, Mcfadden, Forte, Bush(bench/handcuff), Bernard Scott (bench for a bye play next week)
WRs- Wallace, Nicks, Green, Little(picked up for a bye week play this week)
    TE- Finley
    K- Kasay
    DEF - Dallas, Green Bay

Format: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, W/R/T, K, DEF

I've got a lot of guys on bye next week so I picked up Scott at the expense of my handcuff for Foster, Ben Tate. I still need to pick up a TE for next week and am debating who to move/drop. One option is to trade AJ Green for Jason Witten, but then I'd still have to move Finley to make roster space., Thoughts on Witten vs Finley going forward? Also, a guy just dropped Felix Jones and I was debating dropping Bush to pick him up as a bye week filler in week 11 and as a stash guy for a trade later in the season. This of course leaves my handcuff to Mcfadden up for grabs. Any thoughts on this? I'm sitting tied for 1st at 5-1, my matchup next week is the only one the rest of the year where I've got an issue with a lot of guys on a bye. At this point, I'm debating just taking the "L" knowing I'm not dropping guys that might hold value to me later in the year. What's your take? Thanks!

  21. Would you really go Deangelo over Tolbert this week?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I struggled a lot with the middle of this group. Williams is splitting and hasnt done much, but always has potential to break one. Ryan Mathews is the official RB in San Diego. Tolbert only gets the goal line touches and still gets a few catches here and there. Starting him means you are banking on getting a goal line touchdown, which is risky.

I think Williams is safer since he will have more chances. But Tolbert has the upside of getting redzone touches. I would probably go with Tolbert if I had both of them, but accept that it comes with a good amount of risk. Just because I've been disappointed by Williams too many times before.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I like the lineup a lot. Definitely crowded though. Hard to say goodbye to some of these guys with all the byes coming. I definitely have Witten over Finley going forward. Both are still top 4 TEs every week though. Witten gets tons of redzone targets, and most of the catches for the Cowboys.

I would jump on Felix. He will be back probably in 3 weeks. I am not and never will be a believer in handcuffs, so I say it is safe to drop Bush.

I think you can still make this a winnable matchup. Losing Green for Witten could pay off big IF you also have a trade lined up for getting rid of Finley for a WR. If you can’t make that happen, then your team will be weaker. So get both trades lined up. If one doesn’t happen, then scrap the whole thing.

Even if you don’t make moves and just get a TE from free agency, I have to imagine you stand a chance. This lineup is pretty scary. Newton, Foster, McFadden, Wallace, Nicks, FA TE, Forte, Kasay, Dallas/GB. That’s a winning team.

    ReplyDelete
  24. With Murray as the starting RB, I dont see him returning any more punts. They are saying that Dez, Newman and Ogletree will be splitting that role. I would go with Battle. I like his chances this week. He seems to be the most competent of the KC running backs, while Murray will be splitting carries with veteran Choice.

I dont think I would make many changes. Cribbs is there since he is a return man, I would assume. There are a few attractive sleepers on the FA list if you want to get fancy, but I dont think its necessary.

I wont have an official list of Week 9 TEs until that time comes, especially as fast as things are changing in the NFL with people being replaced and injured constantly. Of the list right now, I'd say that Shockey looks the best as long as Olsen is still injured. I'd also watch Kevin Boss closely as he will be working with a new QB. Lets see how often he is used.

  25. Thanks for taking the time to respond, I definitely appreciate your input and I like your take on this. Love the site, keep up the great work!

  26. What you think of this trade?

    I give McFadden/Michael Bush/Torain/Percy

    I get Mathews/Larry Fitz

Other RBs are CJ2K, Ringer, Morris

Other WRs are Calvin, Austin, Nelson, Little

.5 PPR. You like? I’m 2 – 4 and need some wins, and Mathews and Larry have already had their byes. I’m a little thin at RB now, but my lineup would be set from here on out barring any injuries: Calvin/Austin, CJ/Mathews, and Larry in the flex.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey GHL!

Need to pick up a TE! Olsen, Keller, Watson, Cook, Dickson, Winslow are available.
Who do you recommend? Non-PPR League

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have a few quick questions for you.

12-team standard scoring league. Here is my team..
    QB - Freeman
    WR - D. Bryant
    Wr - M. Williams (TB)
    RB - Rice
    RB - Wells
    RB/WR - E. Graham
    TE - Graham

    Bench
    Sproles
    M. Thomas
    Baldwin
    Vick - BYE
    Nicks - BYE
    B. Jacobs - BYE

Heyward-Bay was dropped to waivers and I plan on dropping Baldwin to get him. I am considering throwing him in there at WR2 spot for Williams but I do not really trust either of them. What are your thoughts?

I also am questions Graham and Sproles at the flex position. I am leaning towards Graham as of now but am considering trading him while he has value to get a stronger WR for my bench. Do you think E. Graham will have value after this week?

As always thanks for the help. Hopefully your guys teams are looking good going into this week and good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. With Manningham on a bye and Julio Jones unlikely to play, I need a third WR to play behind Austin and Little. The most attractive options are Arrelious Benn, Jacoby Ford, Sanzenbacher and a few other scrubs. The problem I have is who to drop..I felt compelled to pick up Maurice Morris (under the assumption Best is out) for this week as FJax is on a bye and right now I'm not comfortable starting either Hightower or Helu aside CJ. I can't drop Freeman, Bradford or Aaron Hernandez..so would you recommend dropping Helu for one of the above receivers, if just for this week? Or I could always gamble with Shanahan and drop Morris for one of those WR.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks again GHL! I shall try Battle this week :)

I feel my opponent is very strong on WR/RB, he is has lined up Foster,Ingram,G.Jennings,P.Harvin & J.Jones

Let me see my luck ;) If I find any good players during this week's game I think I can drop Murray to grab some good/replacement WR.. Like I mentioned earlier Crabtree is there in my radar to grab ;)

Please let me know if have to watch out for anything else, Thanks again for your valuable suggestions!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks for your advice, and for posting my issue as a poll question. Based on everyone's advice, I dropped Manningham and picked up Maurice Morris. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I got a pick up question for ya! who do you think will be worth more over the course of the season. Demaryius Thomas or Nate Burleson? or should I wait to see how the Raiders Moore and ford do with the new QB? I'm thinking of dropping Raiders Moore for Thomas or Burleson but can't decide

    ReplyDelete
  33. btw I meant Miles Austin and David Nelson (not collie and jordy).

Trade went thru and I actually threw in Greg Little, not Percy.

    What you think?

    ReplyDelete
  34. GHL!

Drop DeAngelo Williams and pick up Maurice Morris?!

    Thanks!

  35. Hey there,

Earnest Graham or MoJo Drew this week?

    MG

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks! Glad to have you. All we ask is that you help spread the word.

    ReplyDelete
  37. In your situation, I think this is a very smart trade. Mathews has been getting hot, and as you said, he is past the bye. Fitz is definitely what you need to have a killer WR lineup. I think this should definitely get you some wins.

Heres hoping that CJ2K steps things up in the second half of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  38. All of them are actually pretty good. Olsen has been getting a lot of work, but battling with injury. I've been rolling with Watson in a few leagues and he has been stepping up. Keller is starting to get a good amount of work, but he is risky. Winslow seems to be one of the most consistent Bucs players.

Its possible that if all these guys are readily available to you, that you could use some kind of shuffling strategy with your TEs and play whoever looks the best that week. I think for consistency though, Watson is the best looking of the bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Heyward-Bey is a gamble. We really don't know who Palmer will get into a rhythm with. I think he has a good amount of upside though. Baldwin is getting a lot of buzz, but would likely be the smart drop here. I'm not huge on M. Thomas though, so I'd probably dump him over Baldwin. Its your call.

Graham is a good play this week since he'll be getting most of the work. Once Blount is back though, I dont see Graham being a consistent fantasy starter. I have Sproles ahead of Graham in my rankings, but that is mostly for PPR reasons. I think you are safe to roll with Graham at least one more week.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I like the pickup of Morris and think that he could easily start as your RB this week. I just don't see Best playing.

I think you are safe dropping Helu for a WR. Of the ones you listed, none are outstanding. And there arent many sleepers on the market right now. Sanzenbacher has been getting catches, so he could be a good play for PPR. Ford is a mystery right now, we don’t know who Palmer will take a liking too, so that is a big risk. Benn had a breakout game, but is playing the Bears in London, which is never a really great place for fantasy points.

With M Williams doing nothing at all, and Benn finally getting noticed, he could be an interesting play here, but I think that Sanzenbacher is the best option if you are in PPR.

  41. Youre quite welcome. Glad GHL could help.

  42. Really hard to make this call before we have seen Palmer in action. We dont know which receiver he will be liking the most.

Lots of people are talking about Thomas with the QB change and Lloyd shipping out, but I dont know that Tebow has the arm or the protection to get him the ball. Decker will be the Broncos best receiver for the rest of the year as long as Tebow is under center. So I would have to say Burleson is the best of the two. Better passing QB, Less pressure on him because of C Johnson. He gets his share of looks.

Might want to wait to see what Moore can do though, but I have a hunch that it will be Heyward-Bey getting the love.

  43. I read it as Miles and David Nelson to be honest. Not sure why thats exactly where my brain went, but it did. I like that you were able to hold onto Harvin. I like him more with Ponder than I did with McNabb. He seems more energized with Ponder in the game.

  44. I'd probably support this. Wish you had someone lower in the rankings to drop, but Williams has been doing nothing and I have a strong feeling about Morris without Best.

  45. I'd go Drew. He has been pretty solid and the only good part of the Jax offense. Should continue getting a ton of work.

  46. start 3 of these receivers, PPR league

  47. Need two for a WR2 and flex spot in my 1 point PPR league, Willis Mcgahee, nate washington, percy harvin, julio jones. I am pretty confident with McGahee in the flex but very unsure about WR2.

Oh and an update on the Decker pickup. I was shafted by waiver priority but as they say everything happens for a reason and another player inexplicably dropped Julio Jones who I was able to get. I think it worked out for the best. But thanks again for posting the question! I think the new features are great!

  48. Probably Fitz, Wayne and Washington. I can see you squeezing Little or Walter in there too, they have a bit of sleeper potential.

Fitz Wayne and Washington seems safest. If you are completely fed up with Wayne, then I can understand Fitz, Washington and Little.

  49. McGahee at Flex is solid. Julio Jones is the highest on my list, but coming back from injury might keep him limited. Harvin is a gamble, but he did hit it off pretty well with Ponder in the 4th quarter last week. But playing the Packers could be a little too risky. I'd keep an eye on jones for how healthy he will be going into the game. If he plays and the team is confident in him, then go with Jones.

Definitely a great pickup. Dont know why anyone would let him go.

  50. bye week / flex fill inOctober 21, 2011 at 3:52 PM

Who should I start in WR/RB flex, standard scoring:
    Andre Johnson (doubtful)
    Lance Moore (WA)
    Pierre Thomas (benched)
    Maurice Morris (benched)

I'm pretty weary of all 4 players. Depending on Andre's health, I may need a flex fill in again next week.

    Always appreciate the help. Thanks

  51. my lineup before u said anything was gonna be little, washington and fitz, so i will stick with that.

and yes i am very fed up with reggie wayne !

  52. Highly unlikely that Johnson will play.

Same goes for Jahvid Best, meaning that I like Morris here. Thomas is practically a third running back now, so he probably wont light it up. Moore is just like any other NO receiver: highly unpredictable, either a hero or a headache.

With Best out, you can be pretty sure that Morris will get called on for nearly all of the rushing duties.

  53. Right now, I have the following as RBs in a standard league: Foster, Felix, Best, Demarco Murray, and Maurice Morris. I just picked up the last two due to injuries, but Peyton Hillis has been dropped in my league. What do you forecast for Hillis moving forward? Normally I'd jump at getting him, but 1) his stats aren't that great, 2) he's battling injury right now, and 3) the Browns may give more work to Hardesty over time. Having said that, would you drop Morris to pick him up? He won’t help me this weekend, but for the rest of the season, I’d hate to miss out on this chance, if it’s indeed a good opportunity to pursue. The X-factor is also Best’s long term prognosis, as it impacts the long-term value for Morris. What do you think?.

  54. WR - Mike Williams (TB)
    WR - Heyward Bey
    WR/RB - Greg Little

Bench - Mike Tolbert, Torrey Smith, Hightower
How does the line -up look? Any suggestions?

  55. i have mathews at my number 2 rb, should i try and trade him or ride through the rest of the season w/ him?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I would pick him up. He is just a year out of being one of the best in the league, so it makes sense. If it doesnt pan out, oh well, its just a bench spot. If it does pan out, better you having him than anyone else.

I would drop Murray instead of Morris though. Morris is definitely getting the start and Best is a question mark for returning this season at all. Murray is splitting time, Cowboys ground game has done nothing all year, and we know that Felix should be back in 1-3 weeks.

  57. The lineup is definitely iffy. But I feel it is the best with what you've got. Williams has been slacking, but always has a chance. Heyward-Bey is a question mark with a new quarterback, but could be a good gamble, especially with the matchup. Little is officially a starter now and got 12 targets last week and should have scored. Also a good matchup.

Torrey Smith is the only one on your bench that I would give a second though. He is streaky no doubt, but has good upside since Lee Evans will be out again. If you are as sick of Mike Williams as I'm sure you are, it might be time to make the gamble. I personally replaced him in one of my leagues.
